This week — right now, as you read this — a landmark event in African golf travel history is unfolding in Johannesburg, South Africa. The inaugural Africa Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) runs from Monday 18 August to Friday 22 August 2026, convening for the very first time the diverse, dynamic, and deeply connected ecosystem of African golf tourism.

Arikai Africa is a proud founding host and driving force behind the AGTC. This is not just an event we are attending — it is an event we believe the African golf tourism industry has needed for years, and one we have worked to bring to life with purpose and intention.

What Is the Africa Golf Tourism Convention?

The AGTC is the first continental gathering dedicated exclusively to the intersection of golf and tourism in Africa. It brings together:

"Africa has world-class golf. What it has lacked is a world-class platform to tell that story collectively. The AGTC is that platform."

— Kennedy Machiwana, Director, Arikai Africa

The Programme: Five Days of Purpose

The five-day convention is structured around a mix of keynote addresses, panel discussions, B2B networking sessions, product showcases, and hosted golf experiences at Johannesburg's finest courses.

Monday 18 August — Opening & Vision Day. The convention opens with a state-of-the-industry address from the South African Tourism minister, followed by a keynote on the global golf tourism market and Africa's positioning within it. The evening sees a gala dinner at one of Johannesburg's premier venues.

Tuesday 19 August — Trade Day. Dedicated to B2B meetings — a structured marketplace connecting African golf tourism operators with international buyers. Each seller has a dedicated booth and a structured schedule of 30-minute buyer meetings.

Wednesday 20 August — Innovation & Digital. Sessions on digital marketing for African golf, the role of social media in driving golf tourism, LIV Golf's impact on the continent's profile, and the use of AI and technology in DMC operations.

Thursday 21 August — Golf Day. Delegates take to two of Johannesburg's finest courses for a tournament round. Arikai Africa manages the full event — scoring, prizes, catering, and the post-round networking function.

Friday 22 August — Future of African Golf. Closing plenary: the AGTC Declaration — a shared commitment to standards, promotion, and collaboration across the African golf tourism sector. Followed by the official closing cocktail reception.

Key Themes at AGTC 2026

Inbound Golf Tourism Growth. Africa receives a fraction of the golf tourism traffic its product quality deserves. The convention will tackle head-on why this gap exists — visa complexity, infrastructure, perception, and distribution — and what the ecosystem can do together to close it.

LIV Golf and the New Golf Traveller. LIV Golf's arrival in Africa has introduced the continent to a new audience. The AGTC will examine how the African golf tourism industry can convert that exposure into tangible inbound travel.

The High Handicap Golfer. One of the most underserved segments of global golf tourism. Africa's approachable, spectacular courses are genuinely perfect for the recreational golfer — but the message hasn't cut through. A dedicated session will focus on product design and marketing for this growing segment.

Golf + Safari + Beach as a Packaged Product. Africa uniquely offers all three in a single trip. The AGTC will explore how to better package and market this proposition to the global golf travel trade.

Why This Convention Matters

African golf tourism has long operated in silos — courses promoting themselves independently, DMCs building their own networks, tourism boards running their own campaigns. The AGTC creates, for the first time, a shared stage.

The collective voice of African golf tourism is far more powerful than any individual actor. When Leopard Creek and Fancourt and Vipingo Ridge and Karen Country Club and Heritage Mauritius stand together on a single platform — with the world's golf travel trade buyers in the room — the story of African golf changes.

That is what this week is about. And it is just the beginning.

Register Your Interest for AGTC 2027

The inaugural AGTC is a closed event for invited delegates. However, we are already planning the 2027 edition — and registration of interest opens immediately. If you are a course operator, DMC, tourism board, travel agent, lodge, or media organisation with a role in African golf tourism, we want to hear from you.
