LIV Golf Comes
to Africa.

The most disruptive force in professional golf arrives on the continent — and the reverberations will be felt for years.

There are moments in golf that shift the narrative of the sport — moments that alter how the game is perceived, who it reaches, and what it means as a cultural force. LIV Golf's inaugural event on African soil was one of those moments. Our team at Arikai Africa was there for the full week, and we came away with something more than a match result: a genuine conviction that African golf's story has changed.

LIV Golf in Africa: The Context

LIV Golf — the Saudi-backed breakaway league that has redefined professional golf's landscape since its 2022 launch — brought its series to South Africa for the first time in 2026. The event, hosted at one of the country's most prestigious championship courses, drew a world-class field, a global television audience, and the kind of media attention that South African golf has historically struggled to generate outside of the regular Sunshine Tour calendar.

For context: South Africa has produced some of the greatest golfers in history — Gary Player, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen. South Africa hosts elite professional events. South Africa has courses that rank among the finest in the world. Yet somehow, South African golf has never quite broken through to the consciousness of the global golf travelling public in the way that, say, Scottish links golf or the Augusta traditions have.

LIV Golf's arrival in Africa — with its global reach, its high-production format, and its demographic of younger, entertainment-focused golf fans — may have just changed that.

What We Saw on the Ground

The atmosphere at the event was unlike anything we have experienced at a South African professional golf event. The format — no cuts, shotgun starts, team competition running alongside the individual stroke play — created a pace and energy that kept the crowds engaged from the first shot to the last putt. The production values were extraordinary: live music between groups, fan zones, hospitality experiences that matched the best in global sport.

But for Arikai Africa, the most significant observation was not on the course — it was in the conversations we had around it. International golf media, travel trade buyers, tournament sponsors, and fans from Europe, North America, and the Middle East were all asking the same question: "Where can we play golf here? What courses should we visit? Who do we contact to arrange a trip?"

"LIV Golf showed the world that South Africa has a world-class golf product. Our job — and the industry's job — is to convert that awareness into bookings."

The Tourism Opportunity

Every major professional golf event is a tourism advertisement for the host destination. The Masters generates enormous interest in playing Augusta National (impossible, of course, but the dream drives engagement with American golf broadly). The Open Championship sends thousands of travellers to Scotland, Ireland, and England annually. The Dubai Desert Classic has built a golf tourism industry in the UAE.

LIV Golf Africa has the potential to do the same for South Africa — and by extension, for the broader African golf tourism market. The series' global media distribution means that the images of African golf — the landscapes, the wildlife, the sunshine, the extraordinary courses — reached an audience that may never have consciously thought about Africa as a golf destination before.

The immediate challenge for the African golf tourism industry is conversion: taking that moment of awareness and turning it into an enquiry, a booking, and ultimately an extraordinary experience. This is precisely where Arikai Africa sits — at the intersection of inspiration and delivery.
